This page inverts the speed-in-gear model. You enter MPH (or km/h), one gearbox ratio, the primary ratio, the sprockets, and the rear tire. Estimated RPM equals MPH × overall reduction ÷ (circumference in miles × 60).

When to use this calculator
Use it when you know the speed you want to hold, and you want a sense of cruise RPM after a sprocket change. Keep the same tire and primary figures you used on the speed-in-gear page so the two tools stay consistent.
The result is still a model. It does not include clutch slip, tire growth at speed, or a speedometer error.
Enter one gearbox ratio, not a full set. If you want every gear at once, use the speed table and read RPM from the left while you scan MPH.
Zero MPH or zero teeth produce a field error. The page will not divide by an empty circumference.
Worked speeds
With 1.822 primary, 1.043 gearbox, 16/45, and 180/55-17, the model returns the RPM shown in the well. Compare that figure with a tachometer on a flat road.
Shorter gearing raises estimated RPM at 70 MPH. Is that still a comfortable interstate pace for the engine you have?
Take the MPH from speed in gear at 5,000 RPM, enter it here with the same ratios, and you should land back near 5,000 RPM.
Technical questions
Is this the inverse of the speed-in-gear formula?
Yes. The same overall reduction and the same circumference are used. If MPH = RPM × circ_miles × 60 ÷ overall, then RPM = MPH × overall ÷ (circ_miles × 60).
Which tire size does the calculator assume?
The default is 180/55-17, estimated the same way as on the tire-size page. Change the three fields if your rear tire is different.
Can I enter km/h?
Switch the units control to metric. The calculator converts km/h to miles internally so the formula stays in one unit system.
